Deep, reverberating piano music floated in my ears. Grass tickled my neck, my arms, my legs. A wisp of soft white broke the canopy of blues and greens far above me, and I followed its path with my eyes, watching as the cloud disappeared behind the glare of the afternoon sun.

We moved camp this morning. I helped as much as I could manage, carrying enough to make my recovering limbs tremble despite the protests around me. Once we had found a new spot—and set the tents—I had squeezed Tarik’s hand and took off on my own.

I wasn’t far from them—I didn’t feel secure enough for that yet. The others moved in the corner of my peripheral, setting the campfire, talking. Ramiel had followed me. His wings fluttered softly as he snoozed on my stomach. Nestled in the soft grass, I stretched my arms beneath my head and tried to sort my chaotic thoughts.

Emotions overwhelmed my mind—relief, joy, and gratitude, but also pain, and a deep, resonating sorrow. Because I still wasn’t convinced I should have come back with Tarik. I had spent the last day trying to understand what survival would mean, and instead of addressing the problem, I had wallowed and fallen into myself. Taken solace in sleep, disjointed as that was.

I love you.

Those three little words kept replaying in my mind, the ones Tarik had chosen to be his last, if I had—

Thinking about what I had almost done was a torment all its own. No matter what I needed to do, I wouldn’t remove myself from his equation. He had taken a risk, bore a part of his soul, and even if I still struggled to look at him, I would fight on.

For him, I could try. For him, I would fight the demons raking venomed claws through my mind—even if I had to take things one day at a time.

My music paused, the tone of the next piece lighter, softer. I inhaled a deep breath and ran my fingers through my hair, letting my arms fall into the leaf-strewn grass. Tarik had healed my physical wounds, but there were some things even his talents couldn’t touch. I couldn’t shake the feeling of cold steel tearing into my skin, the flashes of uncertainty that railed my senses every time he was near. Even knowing that he was real—that he was my Tarik—I was still flooded by overwhelming distrust. Not for him, but for my own mind, for the security that felt too easy. The constant uncertainty was hell. Tarik meant safety, comfort, warmth—

And Kyan had ripped that from me.

I couldn’t even tell Nevaeh why I could look at her but not him. Every time I tried, the words stuck in my throat and fell away.

The scars he couldn’t heal were the worst kind of torture.

Pressure ached in my chest, tightened an angry grip around my heart. I swiped at the tears that slid free, closing my eyes as I took another slow breath. Calmed the racing beat of my heart.
